My Morning Routine: How I Prepare for the Trading Day in 30 Minutes
The exact pre-market process I use every single trading day to find the best setups.
Why Preparation Matters
The trading day is won or lost before the bell rings. Every profitable day trader I know has a morning routine. The specific steps differ, but the principle is the same: show up prepared or get taken advantage of by those who did.
Here's my exact 30-minute routine, refined over 8 years of full-time trading.
5:30 AM — Market Context (5 minutes)
Before I look at any individual stocks, I check the big picture:
- S&P 500 futures: up, down, or flat?
- Key overnight events: any news that moves markets?
- Economic calendar: any data releases today?
This sets my bias for the day. If futures are down 1% on bad jobs data, I'm looking for shorts, not longs.
5:35 AM — Scanner Review (10 minutes)
I run three scans:
- Gap Up Scanner: stocks gapping up 3%+ on above-average volume
- Gap Down Scanner: stocks gapping down 3%+ on above-average volume
- Relative Volume Scanner: stocks with 2x+ relative volume in pre-market
From these scans, I create a shortlist of 5-8 stocks. No more.
5:45 AM — Chart Review (10 minutes)
For each stock on my shortlist, I check:
- Daily chart: what's the trend? Key support/resistance levels?
- Pre-market price action: where is it trading relative to key levels?
- Catalyst: why is it moving? Earnings? News? Sympathy?
After this review, I narrow down to my top 3 "A+ setups" for the day.
5:55 AM — Game Plan (5 minutes)
For each A+ setup, I write down: entry level, stop loss, target, and position size. If the stock reaches my entry level, I execute. No hesitation, no second-guessing. The plan was made with a clear head, not in the heat of the moment.
That's it. 30 minutes. No watching CNBC, no scrolling Twitter, no overthinking. Prepare, execute, manage.
